My Rembetika Blues
Mary Zournazi's second film weaves the story of her parents' journey to settle in Australia with the brutal history of Smyrna (now Turkish Izmir), Egypt and Greece. Mary tells us how rembetika, a musical culture whose ownership is claimed by Greece, Turkey and numerous other cultures to the north, was born in the bleak despair of displaced people.
I was particularly pleased with the opening title. Mary had expressed her feeling that it should come and go like the clouds and be informed by a very passionate piece of rembetiko music.
