The Last Violin
Carla Thackrah, was referred to me by Tom Zubrycki. Carla and her partner, Romano Crivici, are musicians who met while playing in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Romano had been playing violins made by Harry Vatiliotis since his wild days as a hippie classical violin renegade. Carla and Romano thought it would be fine to commission one last violin and document the process. What came of that idea is a violin making musical odyssey as we watch on with Romano and Harry trading banter as Harry shapes some well cured timber into Romano's next violin. We drift poetically from chiseling away to sequences of Romano's music with virtuoso violinist, Alexandra Osborne taking the lead on Romano's composition, a dedication to Harry's wife, Maria.
The Last Violin found enthusiastic audiences at 2 Greek film festivals: The Cyprus International Film Festival, Nicosia, and the Bridges International Film Festival in Corinth. It won best documentary at both festivals. Romano and Alexandra Osborne performed Romano's music, live, at both festivals
As the musicians arrived to play Maria's Concert, there was a very annoying ute doing a 3 point turn - it had to go!
